Frozen Mango Coconut Daiquiri + How to Make a Healthy Cocktail

This healthy cocktail recipe combines mango with lime juice and coconut rum for a refreshingly sweet and sour frozen daiquiri drink that’s perfect for summertime sipping.

Frozen Mango Daiquiri

Mango, coconut rum, lime and honey = sweet, icy summer sipping. I’m currently dreaming of summer vacation destinations and believe something tropical is in the plan. As I’m finally slowing down enough to look that options, this frozen mango daiquiri will have to work until I get that flight booked.

How’s the weather where you are? Summer has unofficially hit Atlanta. For the past couple weeks, the mercury has climbed towards 90 and judging by the size of my hair, the humidity has set in. It’s actually been hot for a while, so this drink couldn’t come sooner. This month’s recipe redux challenge was to show off our favorite healthy cocktails and mocktails.

I blended this mango daiquiri using what was in the kitchen. I had a couple of limes, lots of frozen fruit in the freezer, and a bottle of coconut rum that was testing the limits of that whole “liquor doesn’t go bad” idea.

It took a few tries to figure out what to call this mango daiquiri. What should you call a drink that’s completely made up? I had settled on either Frozen Mango Rum Punch, Frozen Mango Limeade, some sort of slushie and a few others but I checked with Google for guidance.

In the process of deciding on a title, I learned that a classic daiquiri is a blend of citrus, rum, and sugar. This was news to me. All of the premade frozen concentrates and “daiquiri bars” made me think daiquiris were traditionally frozen. They are not. (Clearly, I’m not a drinker. I guess we all have to learn at some point.)

Using just a touch of honey, and a generous pour of club soda helps make this frozen mango daiquiri a bit healthier than most. The club soda helps lighten it up and adds a little sparkle – just enough effervescence to make it interesting. It comes together so quickly. And there’s no need for a trip to the freezer section at the supermarket for any of those syrupy sweet daiquiri mix concentrates.

And I know. When it comes to cocktails, most people aren’t checking for healthy ones. A cocktail is a cocktail. Right? True. But there are a few things you can do to make them healthier. If you’ve read this far, you are in that minority that wants a slimmer sip. So, here are my top tips to do just that.

Here are a few other ways to make a healthier drink:

  1. Use frozen fruit as a base. Bulk up your drinks with sweet frozen pineapple, watermelon, and peaches, which are ideal in the summer.
  2. Muddle fruit for sweetness. Smash fresh berries, grapes, kiwi or melons in the bottom of a glass or shaker. Add club soda or sparkling wine for a sweet and fizzy drink.
  3. Cut the sugar. Sometimes drink recipes call for too much simple syrup or sugar. Scale it down. You might be surprised to find that less sugar works just fine.
  4. Add healthy stuff. Ginger, 100% fruit juice, mint and other herbs add tons of flavor and a few nutrient benefits in the process.
