Summer of Healthy Eating Week 10: Stay on Track

Summer is winding down.  How are you coping?  I don’t know about you but my life is about to get a lot busier.  It’s in times like this that healthy routines fall by the wayside.  So, here are my tips for achieving and maintaining healthy habits in the midst of a busy life.

  • Breathe and focus. Take a moment in the morning, at lunch or before bed to focus on one healthy habit you want to accomplish or maintain that day. It may even help to post a reminder on your computer or bathroom mirror.  Sure you’ve heard this before but it only works if you do it.
  • Schedule it in. We keep detailed calendars for work, hair appointments and family commitments but too often the Zumba® class or morning walk is conveniently left off the schedule.  Plan your meals so fast food and vending machines look like sloppy seconds.  Put it on the calendar. If it’s not scheduled, it’s not real.
  • Hold on to summer’s harvest. Enjoy summer’s bounty through the fall and winter by freezing your favorites like berries, fresh corn, green beans and okra. These all freeze well and help you create quick, flavorful meals throughout the year.

And remember, we make time for the things we feel are important.  If you are constantly making excuses for not working out or eating well, take a step back to reassess what’s really important.
