Try it Tuesday: Pummelo

Published: Mar 3, 2015 by Marisa Moore·

Welcome to my new Try it Tuesday series. Each week (ok most weeks!) I will be sharing a new food, gadget or product that I think you might like.

First up… Pummelo! Thanks to Sunkist Growers, I got to try pummelo for the first time last weekend. If you didn’t know, pummelo (also spelled pomelo) is the largest member of the citrus clan. Most weigh 2-3 pounds but some have been spotted as large as 11 pounds! That’s a big piece of fruit.

Though it takes some work to get to, the fruit is sweetly reminiscent of grapefruit but much more mild. Getting through the thick, spongy rind is well worth the effort as one cup of pummelo will give you twice the vitamin C you need for the day.

Once I rescued all of the fruit from the rind, honestly I didn’t know what to do with it. I ate it straight and then tried it as they traditionally enjoy it in Malaysia – with a sprinkle of chili pepper. It was a refreshingly sweet and spicy snack that I’d definitely have again. You can also use it the same way you would grapefruit – maybe make a little fruit salsa to go over fish or toss the pummelo sections into a salad for a fresh burst of flavor and added moisture.

Verdict: Buy it. Try it. With a size that challenges the size of a small child’s head, pummelo is a fun fruit that you and your family will enjoy digging in to!

I love these! When I first has one, I was so surprised by how THINK the skin was and how little of the fruit there actually was!
