Curiosity Killed the Carrot

Published: May 29, 2013 · Modified: Aug 8, 2014 by Marisa Moore·

This was just a few weeks ago on May 2.

And here it is on May 28.

So the garden is doing well on the surface.  And today my curiosity got the best of me… and a baby carrot.  See this is what happened…

I planted my carrot and beet seeds on Good Friday – almost two months ago.  They should mature in about 60  days – according to the folks labeling the seed packets. Well, since the time has elapsed and the carrot and beet tops have been growing like weeds over the past week, I thought surely there was something there to taste.  Well, here’s what I pulled up.

Poor little carrot. I wish I’d recorded it because looking back… it was rather funny.  I tugged at the pretty green top and it quickly popped out of the soil.  I dug down thinking I’d accidentally separated the top from the root. Nope… this is all there was.

As I said before, this is all VERY new for me.  I am learning as I go.  I wish I’d joined my Grandpa in the garden when I was a kid.  Because now,  it’s truly an adventure. Planting the seeds was the easiest step.  I suspect it will take a few cycles for me to learn the basics of harvest and how to prevent  bugs from eating my plants.  ( I’m currently wading through the internet’s million and one recipes for garlic oil spray and other natural remedies.)

Just wanted to give an update and share this little misadventure!  Be back soon!
